The Chance fall gives us

Written By: Yelena Mongbet

Ever since I was young, I have absolutely loved the fall. I may be a bit biased, considering the fact that I am a fall baby, but something about the season just feels so refreshing. As summer comes to a close and leaves start to cover the ground, fall offers the promise of new beginnings and the opportunity to reconnect with and commit to ourselves. I truly believe it is the most powerful time of the year because change is in the air. Hot beverages come out, candles get lit, fall fashion makes a comeback, and people long for comfort—whether it’s in cozy sweats or the warmth of loved ones. Besides being a time of newness and renewed energy, fall is a time of letting go. Trees and plants release their leaves so they can turn their attention inward and generate the energy needed for new growth. We, too, can follow this rhythm of nature and let go of what no longer serves us—whether it is clutter, people, limiting beliefs, self-criticism, or less-than-healthy habits—creating space for new things to grow. In the same regard, it allows us to try something new and re-discover ourselves through a new lens. Maybe controversial, but dare I say it's the real new year?

Fall Equinox: The fall equinox, or autumnal equinox, is when the sun is directly over the equator, making day and night equal in length. More notably, it marks the beginning of autumn—a time of transition, celebration, and reflection as the seasons change. It's a time to look to God, the Universe, ourselves, or whatever and whomever you may believe in to reflect and seek guidance. If you think about it, it’s really an opportunity to pause after a long summer filled with endless adventure and to consider what you choose to leave behind in the previous season or take with you as you enter the new one. With that being said, it truly is a great time to rebalance and refocus your energy. I believe that when doing this, you allow yourself to recenter in the present moment and remain hopeful for the future.

Personal Experience: I am a Libra girl through and through, so I absolutely love when the fall rolls around. I think of it as a time to express gratitude as I wrap up another year of my life and reflect on all I have learned. Normally, I am going back to school, settling into a routine, seeing old friends, and making new ones, but this year, I am taking the time to fall in love with myself again. The last four years have been filled with 16-credit semesters, endless internships, essays, coffee chats, clubs, and constant stimulation. To be honest, it hasn't just been the last four years; my entire life has revolved around the concept of "back to school." But this fall, I am taking the time to get back to myself—to figure out who I am and what I want to do with my life. I feel grateful to have the opportunity to do so. It’s a time of remembrance for me too, beyond the accomplishments and diplomas, or anything that society often deems as “success.” Those things mean little if you can’t look within and recognize that you are part of a much larger creation and Creator.

Autumn always resets my inner clock, but this year, more than ever. I feel like I attract the most abundance during this season. Just as trees shed their leaves, I shed old parts of myself and embrace the season of change. This fall, I have taken myself out on dates, journaled, started a new book every two weeks, and really allowed my thoughts to flow. I have also learned to validate my emotions, without feeling the need to justify them or worry about what others may think. I have come to understand that I am truly one of a kind, and it’s amazing to be me; there will never be another.

Something that has helped me tackle anxious thoughts and the fear of expecting the worst is an amazing idea: “Why am I preparing for something that I don’t want?” Since anxiety is the fear of the future and a tactic the body uses to mentally and physically prepare you for the worst outcome, this question you ask yourself makes understanding what your anxious thoughts do pretty simple. This thought process has carried me through the last few weeks, and it’s something I encourage everyone to consider and adopt. The opportunity to slow down is a gift, and one I hope everyone can take advantage of. While the world reinforces the need to always stay busy, I appreciate the chance to do as I please, while still working toward my future goals. It's a healthy balance, and I know that one day I will look back and be grateful for these times. Autumn feels like a part of me because, in my opinion, she is the ultimate mindfulness teacher—a time for nostalgia and bittersweet feelings all around.
