Berry’s Guide to the Best Women-Owned Restaurants in NYC

Written by Arianna Donato & Lila Mabanta

In honor of Women’s Month, which dare I say should be every month, we’re going to take a deep dive through some of my favorite women-owned restaurants in New York City. When I think of Women’s History Month, I think of my mom, the person who always managed to put a good plate of food in my stomach, and kept a roof over my head; while maintaining a professional career and supporting her loved ones emotionally. March reminds us of how lucky we are to have outstanding female role models, like our mothers, who’ve struggled in unimaginable ways to get us to where we are now. This month should be full of celebration, but more importantly, dedicated to giving recognition to all the deeds that go unthanked and the new paths paved by women's accomplishments and contributions.

Even though we're still marching for our rights in 2024, it's been 156 years since women in the United States have been allowed the joy of the sacred girl dinner. Delmonico's, one of New York's oldest and most famous restaurants, spearheaded the then-radical undertaking in 1868 of hosting the first women's-only luncheon for the Sorosis Club, the country's first professional women's organization. Until that meal, women had to be escorted by men to dine in public restaurants. I don’t know how I’d make it through life without meeting up with my girls at the nearest Mexican restaurant and venting over Margaritas, chips, and guac; no boys allowed. Everybody say thank you Delmonico’s!

This all being said, let’s dive right into it.

Dirt Candy

If you’re into vegetarian-friendly meals, Dirt Candy is a great place to go. Located in the Lower East Side, they offer a unique 5-course meal that includes a focus on different vegetables, a mushroom croissant, and even a high-tea-looking platter of a deconstructed salad. So if you’re in the mood for something really fresh, a.k.a., fun vegetable dishes, check out Dirt Candy with your gal-pals.

Modern Love Brooklyn

Modern Love Brooklyn is a great vegan option. Located in Williamsburg, they have a great selection for brunch, dinner, dessert, or just drinks! Some of their menu highlights include oyster mushroom calamari, buffalo wings made from the choice of seitan or cauliflower, seitan and waffles, and homemade vegan ice cream. So, if you’re looking for some fun vegan replacements, check out Modern Love Brooklyn and then enjoy Williamsburg afterward!

The Butcher's Daughter

Personally one of my favorites, with multiple locations throughout the city (and in Los Angeles), The Butcher’s Daughter is a great place for brunch or dinner, with a clever, tongue-in-cheek name that describes its feminine, plant-based modern take. I’ve been to all three of their NYC locations–Williamsburg, Nolita, and the West Village–and their food never disappoints. As a brunch girly, I’ve enjoyed their banana french toast and butcher's waffles a few times, all in the company of my best girl friends.

Vinatería

If you’re not looking for plant-based meals, Vinatería, located on 112th St in Harlem, is a great option for a more upscale, Spanish and Italian-inspired dining experience. Although they do offer brunch as well, their dinner has a delicious selection of fish, pasta, and starter meals, with (if you couldn’t already tell by the name), an equally delicious wine selection. So, if you want an excuse for a nice European-esque dinner and gossip over wine with your favorite girls, let this be your place to try!

Balaboosta

Balaboosta is another fun one. Located in the Meatpacking District, is a great selection of Middle Eastern cuisine, inspired by Persian, Yemenite, and Israeli dishes. Balaboosta is great whether you want to casually share yummy appetizers with friends, or book a private room for a fun party! Personally, just thinking about it makes me crave their hummus and whipped feta.

Kiki’s

Kiki’s is extra special because we Berry girls had dinner here the first time we had a group get-together (a personal favorite of our founder’s, Tonia)! Straight after some relaxing and creatively stimulating fun at Happy Medium in downtown Manhattan, the group of us shared delicious starters around a tavern-esque long table at Kiki’s. I totally recommend trying the tzatziki and hummus with pita (obviously), maroulosalata salad, spanakopita (your girl loves spinach pie), and saganaki. I’ve had the same dishes at other Greek restaurants in New York, and none have compared–especially to their saganaki.

Cecily

Lastly, for the Greenpoint girlies, Cecily is a yummy dinner option with an ever-changing menu based on sustainable ingredients and a great wine bar. For a small and cozy vibe, try out Cecily for a great dinner with your favorite company.

This list could go on forever, but for the sake of time, here are some of the best women-owned restaurants (in our opinion) to take your girls to. Hopefully, this can help answer the hardest question ever: “What do you want for dinner?”

Be well,

Arianna & Lila
